Brothers Beau and Ford LeChamp carried the Calder adaptation gene dormant within their bodies until lightning struck the baton during the hand-off in a relay race. Beau's body reacted to the lightning strike, of which he took the brunt, while Ford was hit with the concussive blast of air that followed. They both found themselves able to move and act at superhuman speeds. When Beau runs, he builds up a distinctive corona of electricity that he can channel. Ford surrounds himself with a field of kinetic energy that allows him to produce sonic booms and concussive blasts. Beau, forced by his powers to abandon his dream of becoming an Olympic runner, accepted a special scholarship to the university in Nebula City. When Ford graduated, he followed his brother, and when Beau announced his intention to use his powers as a superhero, Ford once again tagged along... if only to keep an eye on his impetuous older brother.
