At this point, we shall, as we sometimes have before, depart from our main narrative in order to focus our attention on other matters that are equally pressing... for there are more forces at work in the world than are apparent to the eye, and more threads to any story than might easily be counted. Of course, in doing so, we must for the time turn our attention away from the ongoing narrative regarding the creation of this world, as well as all thoughts of the immediate future of Ms. Perfection Jones and the company in which she has found herself. Regretable, but inevitable, as the fate of Ms. Jones will undoubtedly be affected in a very real way by a course of events which at first blush seem to have no relation to each other, much less to her. Consider: The leaders of a gang of occultists complete a ritual which results in the grisly deaths of all their numbers, perhaps several hundred strong. One night later, a man falls dead in a dark and smoky nightclub in the course of attempting to impress a most unusual young woman. She screams, and then, to borrow a phrase, the lady vanishes. Another woman prowls the streets of Star Harbor, clad only in shadows and moonlight. Meanwhile, the mysterious Seeress--rumored to be all-seeing, if not exactly all-knowing, has sequestered her fiery champion within the confines of the Club while setting a raven to the task of watching over the city. What do these events signify? How do they relate to one another? The answers to some of these questions have been long in the coming, but in our next chapter, some of them at least will be answered. In the mean time... please, forgive the interruption. |
