In The Beginning, there was the Primordium. And It was the Tetragrammaton, the Four-In-One, encompassing within Its vastness everything that could be and everything that couldn't be, all things and nothing, light and dark, male and female, creation and destruction... But all of that doesn't become important until later. Perhaps I should skip ahead a bit. At least until after the earth cools. Let's see now... life arises, eventually, then it dies out and arises again. That happens rather a lot, in fact, until... well, we'll come to that later, too. Then the continents shift... at some times a bit faster than at others... and eventually there comes to be a sort of place that's called the United States of America. I expect you'll have heard of that... or at least, some place that's quite a bit like it. This one's a bit different from your United States, just as this earth is a bit different from yours. For one thing, it has a few extra cities in it. There's a pair on each coast, one called Crescent Bay and the other Star Harbor. Our stories concern these cities... and the entirety of Creation around them, but it's the sort of story that makes more sense when you tell it about people and places rather than great big cosmic such-and-suches. These cities are both, in their own separate ways, havens of a sort for people who are different. In times long past, they would have been called supernatural beings, the products of congress between gods or devils and mortal men. Today, learned men of science, thinking very little of gods and devils, have discovered them to be 'mutants', the products of an accelerated evolutionary process they can't begin to understand but are pretty sure is happening all the same. Star Harbor is a haven for mutants and others who are decidedly other because it is a city fraught with unique perils that many decades ago was forced to turn for its salvation to the deeds of extraordinary men and women, setting a precedent that continues to this day. Thus, its population tolerates a certain amount of nonsense from people with laser eyes and billowing capes while otherwise being a perfectly sensible place. Crescent Bay, on the other hand, is located in a place that is called California, and if your earth has one of those, I expect that's all that has to be said for that. I could tell you more about the history of these places, and of this world... and how at so many times that history has been changed by small groups of people with incredible abilities--and even less credible names--and eventually, I will, but for now, we must turn our attention to one point in time, to one young woman who makes her home in Star Harbor. Her personal capabilities border on the incredible. Her name does, too. Her whole life, she's been told that she possesses limitless potential and can achieve anything she sets her mind to. Is this true? We'll find out in time. The fate of a whole world and more may hinge upon the answer. |
